Outlook on August 12 quoted an announcement from the Pakistani Prime Minister's office saying that Senator Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar of the Balochistan Awami Party has been appointed as the interim Prime Minister of Pakistan.

The announcement came after a meeting between outgoing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and opposition leader in parliament Raja Riaz.

Earlier, on August 11, Pakistani President Arif Alvi asked Mr. Sharif and Mr. Raja Riaz to propose a candidate for the position of interim Prime Minister on August 12.

Thus, Mr. Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, a 52-year-old lawmaker from the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), will lead a caretaker government until new elections later this year.

According to the Pakistan Observer newspaper, Mr. Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar is a famous political activist who served as the spokesman of the Balochistan provincial government before being elected to the Senate in March 2018.

He co-founded the BAP political party, which contested the 2018 general election under the slogan "'Stronger Nation, United People".

According to Dawn newspaper, while a Senator, he served as Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development and was also a member of four other committees including Business Advisory, Finance and Budget, Foreign Affairs and Science and Technology.

Senator Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar is considered to have good relations with the PML-N and PPP parties, as well as being close to the Pakistani military leadership.
