200 inmates attack prison guard in California

The incident of 200 inmates rioting at Riverside County Jail caused the California state government to issue a security warning to the entire prison system.

The California Department of Corrections (CDCR), on the west coast of the United States, said the riot occurred at around 10am on January 31 at Ironwood Prison, located in Riverside County and near the border with Arizona, when prison guards were searching for prohibited items.

An inmate suddenly attacked a prison guard while being escorted across the courtyard. The situation quickly spiraled out of control with about 200 inmates engaging in brawls and throwing rocks at security forces.

When all warning messages failed, prison officials fired warning shots and used chemicals used to control riots. CDCR said Ironwood prison security also used non-lethal rubber bullets to restore order.

The riot left eight prison staff and one inmate in need of treatment for injuries. All nine were transferred to another facility with better medical care and released a day later.

According to CDCR, the Ironwood security incident prompted the agency to adjust its procedures and issue a 24-hour security alert for the entire California prison system. The changes focused on inmate activity in the prison’s yard and common room areas.

Ironwood Prison continues to investigate the January 31 security incident and has submitted a report to the California Office of Inspector General. Prison officials have identified 30 inmates who played prominent roles in the riot.
