"We have clear evidence that (South Korean) military gangs are the main culprits," Kim Yo-jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, stressed, warning that "the provocateurs will pay a heavy price," according to KCNA news agency.

North Korea has accused South Korea of flying unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) over its capital Pyongyang to drop leaflets containing “seditious rumors.” Pyongyang warned on October 13 that if another UAV is found, it will be considered a “declaration of war.”

The South Korean military has previously denied being behind the drone flights, while speculation has focused on South Korean activist groups that have long dropped leaflets and US dollars into North Korea, often via balloons.

Speaking at a press conference on October 13, spokesman Lee Seong-joon of the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said: "Our military is closely monitoring the situation and is ready to respond to North Korea's provocations."

At noon today, October 15, Pyongyang blew up several sections of the inter-Korean road north of the Military Demarcation Line, according to Yonhap citing information from the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff. The South Korean side fired warning shots in response to North Korea's move. In addition, the South Korean military has increased reconnaissance and surveillance activities and is ready to respond to any situation.

In the face of escalating tensions between South Korea and North Korea, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said today that China calls on all parties on the Korean peninsula to avoid "further escalation," according to AFP. "Tensions on the Korean peninsula do not serve the common interests of all parties and the priority is to avoid further escalation of conflict," Ms. Mao stressed.
