Portrait of the U.23 Southeast Asian champion, thank you to the young Vietnamese heroes

The Vietnam U23 team had an emotional journey and deservedly won the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship. And these are the heroes who helped us successfully defend the title after defeating the host team Indonesia U23 with a score of 1-0 in the tense final match on the evening of July 29.

Goalkeeper Tran Trung Kien (born in 2003, 1.91 m tall - HAGL)

- Photo 1.

Trung Kien showed the true class and character of a goalkeeper who regularly plays in the V-League and is on the national team. He always maintains concentration, has good reflexes and controls the space.

Center back Le Van Ha (2004, 1.84 m - Hanoi Club)

- Photo 2.

Van Ha has not had many opportunities to play in this tournament. However, he shows great potential for development and will improve a lot if given the opportunity to play in the V-League.

Center back Pham Ly Duc (2003, 1.82 m - Hanoi Police Club)

- Photo 3.

Ly Duc is the leader of the U.23 Vietnam team's defense . In addition to his professional values, he is also a spiritual support for his teammates, even overwhelming the opponent's mentality, always playing like a warrior.

Center back Nguyen Hieu Minh (2004, 1.84 m - PVF-CAND Club)

- Photo 4.

"The rock" in front of Trung Kien's goal. Thanks to his impressive physique, he almost always wins in aerial battles. Hieu Minh also impressed with a double against the U.23 Laos team in the opening match.

Center back Nguyen Duc Anh (2003, 1.75 m - Hanoi Club)

- Photo 5.

Physical limitations make it difficult for Duc Anh to compete for a position. However, he is always highly appreciated for his impressive footwork and modern football thinking.

Midfielder Nguyen Thai Son (2003, 1.71 m - Thanh Hoa Club)

- Photo 6.

Thai Son still showed his best qualities: calm and confident. But in a tournament where coach Kim Sang-sik needed a lot of explosiveness, he was rarely used.

Striker Nguyen Dinh Bac (2004, 1.79 m - CAHN Club)

- Photo 7.

The star of the U.23 Vietnam team, always knowing how to speak up at the right time is the most accurate description of Dinh Bac. He shows remarkable maturity when always handling things calmly, reasonably and also full of surprises, contributing a lot to the team's playing style.

Review of the final match between U.23 Vietnam and U.23 Indonesia: Despite conceding the game, coach Kim Sang-sik and his team still won the championship

Midfielder Nguyen Van Truong (2003, 1.82 m - Hanoi Club)

- Photo 8.

Although he has not exploded as expected, Van Truong still performed well. He supported the defense a lot and also helped the U.23 Vietnam team control the ball more smoothly.

Striker Nguyen Quoc Viet (2003, 1.73 m - Ninh Binh Club)

- Photo 9.

Quoc Viet has not exploded as fans expected from the "King of Youth Tournament". What this striker lacks is luck and a bit of sharpness. However, he still plays well every time he is on the field.

Midfielder Nguyen Thanh Dat (2004, 1.68 m - Viettel The Cong Club)

- Photo 10.

"Super sub" in the hands of coach Kim Sang-sik. Thanh Dat always played at an average level or better every time he was on the field as a substitute. He was the one who sent a beautiful cross for Dinh Bac to seal the 2-1 victory over the U.23 Cambodia team.

Midfielder Khuat Van Khang (2003, 1.68 m - Viettel The Cong Club)

- Photo 11.

Captain, the mental and professional support for the U.23 Vietnam team. Van Khang can do everything: score, create, support defense, control the ball... He is one of the players who creates the most opportunities in the tournament.

Midfielder Nguyen Xuan Bac (2003, 1.74 m - PVF-CAND Club)

- Photo 12.

Deserves to be called the "discovery" of the tournament. This is the first time he has played for the Vietnam U.23 team in an official tournament, but he has played extremely impressively with his excellent ability to participate in attacks and scored the winning goal 2-1 against the Philippines U.23 team in the semi-finals.

Goalkeeper Nguyen Tan (2005, 1.73 m - Ba Ria Vung Tau Club)

- Photo 13.

Trung Kien's certainty has left Nguyen Tan with no chance. However, his development journey is still worth waiting for.

Midfielder Le Viktor (2003, 1.8 m - Ha Tinh Club)

- Photo 14.

Le Viktor always impresses in training sessions or practice matches. However, in his first time wearing the red and yellow star shirt of his homeland, the overseas Vietnamese player is still quite nervous and has not proven his class. Hopefully, he will play better in upcoming tournaments such as the 2026 U.23 Asian qualifiers and the 33rd SEA Games.

Center back Dang Tuan Phong (2003, 1.78 m - Viettel The Cong Club)

- Photo 15.

Tuan Phong had some solid minutes, completing his task well when replacing Ly Duc, who was injured in the match against the U.23 Cambodia team. This player will improve a lot when he gets to practice and compete regularly alongside good central defenders of Vietnamese football such as Bui Tien Dung and Nguyen Thanh Binh.

Center back Nguyen Nhat Minh (2003, 1.75 m - Hai Phong Club)

- Photo 16.

If he maintains his current form, Nhat Minh can definitely be called up to the Vietnam national team in the future. He is left-footed, plays well in the left-sided center-back position, contributes a lot to the team's ball development, and even has 1 assist. His intelligent playing style and good reading of situations help him make up for his physical weakness in defense.

Left back Nguyen Phi Hoang (2003, 1.72 m - Da Nang Club)

- Photo 17.

"Key player" of the U.23 Vietnam team thanks to his ability to attack and defend comprehensively. Phi Hoang's crosses and passes often create extremely delicious opportunities for his teammates.

Midfielder Nguyen Cong Phuong (2006, 1.7 m - Viettel The Cong Club)

- Photo 18.

As the "youngest" of the team, Cong Phuong still plays very maturely. His ability to control the ball well and handle it intelligently helps him gain the trust of coach Kim Sang-sik. He was the author of the only goal that helped U.23 Vietnam defeat U.23 Indonesia in the final match on the evening of July 29.

Striker Nguyen Ngoc My (2004, 1.77 m - Thanh Hoa Club)

- Photo 19.

Ngoc My hasn't had many opportunities to show his skills. However, he still played well, leaving his mark with some skillful dribbling situations.

Right back Vo Anh Quan (2004, 1.73 m - Ninh Binh Club)

- Photo 20.

With no international experience, Anh Quan had an unsatisfactory first 45 minutes and was substituted early. However, with each match, he played more impressively and became an indispensable link.

Right back Pham Minh Phuc (2004, 1.72 m - CAHN Club)

- Photo 21.

Strength and determination are Minh Phuc's strengths. He performed quite well when coming on as a substitute, but because Anh Quan played excellently, this player could not contribute much.

Striker Le Van Thuan (2006, 1.76 m - Thanh Hoa Club)

- Photo 22.

The best young player of the V-League 2024-2025 season was called up at the "last minute" when Thanh Nhan was injured. He was given the opportunity to show his skills, played well but had an unfortunate missed situation. This is just the beginning, Van Thuan's career is still very long and hopefully he will continue to improve his level.

Goalkeeper Cao Van Binh (2005, 1.83 m - SLNA)

- Photo 23.

Van Binh often played well in previous youth tournaments. In the near future, he will be the main goalkeeper at SLNA when his senior Van Viet moves to Viettel The Cong Club. At that time, he will have the opportunity to make great progress to become Trung Kien's rival in the upcoming youth tournaments.

Coach Kim Sang-sik

Coach Kim Sang-sik has shown a lot in this tournament. He made extremely reasonable and accurate personnel and tactical decisions and demonstrated his ability to read the game very quickly. Thanks to that, the U.23 Vietnam team raced to the finish line, winning the championship in a worthy manner.

In addition, the success of the U.23 Vietnam team also has the silent contribution of the coaching staff, experts, doctors, and officials of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF).
