(CLO) The Syrian interim government announced that all public and private educational institutions will reopen on December 15, after a period of interruption due to recent political upheavals in the country.

In a statement issued by the prime minister's office on December 12, the Syrian interim government affirmed that educational institutions are fully prepared to ensure that the learning process can continue normally.

The reopening of schools and universities is seen as a crucial step towards stabilizing daily life, just days after Hayat Tahrir al-Sham rebels seized control of Damascus, leading to the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad.

Throughout the 13-year civil war, Syrians have faced a myriad of challenges, including conflict, displacement, COVID-19, a devastating earthquake, and an economic crisis. These hardships have impacted every aspect of their lives, with children’s education taking a particularly severe hit. Nearly half of school-age children are out of school, and about a third of the country’s schools are not functioning.

In northern Syria, the education system is collapsing. School closures have left thousands of students and teachers without access to education. The North-East Syria Teachers’ Union (UNTES) has highlighted the impact on children in the region, who are losing out on vital learning opportunities.
