Landlord evicted tenant with cancer because he feared his house was "haunted"

Recently, the incident of a man in China forcing a tenant with terminal cancer to leave his house has outraged the country's online community.

Accordingly, the landlord, Mr. Zhang, rented his apartment to a couple for 5,500 yuan/month (equivalent to about 19 million VND). Mr. Zhang said he rented it at a lower price than the market price, to earn some extra money while he was selling it and waiting for someone to buy the apartment.

In the lease agreement, he asked the couple to be available if a buyer came to view the house. They agreed and signed a contract to rent the apartment until mid-November of this year.

However, on September 4, Mr. Zhang suddenly posted a notice on the apartment door, requiring the couple to move out of the apartment within 1 week. The reason was that while taking a buyer to see the house, Mr. Zhang happened to see that his wife was bald. He asked the husband and he said that his wife had terminal cancer.

"This is a private matter, unrelated to the rental contract, so we have no reason to tell him," the husband said.

However, this made Mr. Zhang worried that if his wife died here, the apartment would be "haunted" and the value would decrease from 500,000 to 1 million yuan (equivalent to 1.7 to more than 3.4 billion VND). Not only did he kick the tenant out of the house, he also forced the couple to sign a compensation agreement if the house lost value.

Both rejected the deal and said they would only leave the house if Mr. Zhang paid compensation for terminating the lease early. To date, the two sides have not found common ground.
