(CLO) According to Reuters news agency, the eldest son Donald Trump Jr. is helping his father, President-elect Donald Trump, select members of the next US administration's cabinet, which is causing controversy in this country.

Mr. Trump, who values loyalty, has long relied on family members for political advice. This time, his eldest son, Mr. Trump Jr., helped him choose cabinet nominees.

That ranged from backing Sen. J.D. Vance as vice presidential nominee to blocking former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo from joining the cabinet, according to sources including donors, personal friends and political allies.

Trump Jr. is expected to join conservative venture capital fund 1789 Capital, though one of the sources said he will continue to host a politics-focused podcast and support candidates who follow President-elect Trump's political agenda.

He will advise his father at the White House, the sources added, although they cautioned that Trump Jr. is unlikely to be involved in day-to-day discussions. Trump Jr. and the transition team did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

In addition to securing candidates loyal to his father, Trump Jr. has often sought candidates who support protectionist economic policies and cut military interventions and foreign aid, according to sources and his comments on social media and in public.

Two candidates backed by Trump Jr. could face difficult confirmation processes in the U.S. Senate: Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whom Trump has nominated to be U.S. health secretary, and Tulsi Gabbard, who is nominated to be director of national intelligence.

Trump Jr. also played a key role in lobbying his father to select his close friend Vance as his vice presidential running mate. One of the sources added that Trump was very pleased with Vance, thereby continuing to place his trust in his son as an adviser during the transition.

Trump Jr. strongly wanted Ric Grenell, a close friend and former ambassador to Germany, to be secretary of state, according to a person familiar with the matter. His father ultimately chose Sen. Marco Rubio.

“The reality this time is we really know what we’re doing,” Trump Jr. told Fox News earlier this month. “And that’s surrounding my father with people who are both competent and loyal.”

Mr Trump's high-profile daughter, Ivanka, and her husband, Jared Kushner, played prominent roles in his 2016 presidential campaign, as well as the subsequent transition and throughout his first term.

This time around, they have been less active, although Kushner, a former senior adviser to Mr Trump and business-focused figure in the Middle East, told Reuters he was briefing real estate investor Steve Witkoff about his new job as special envoy to the region.
