Saving a female student in critical condition after being stabbed in the heart and lungs

On March 13, Vung Tau Hospital announced that after 24 hours of surgery, patient NNVA had very positive developments, with stable hemodynamics and vital signs. The surgery was successful. The patient is currently being monitored in the intensive care and anti-poisoning department.

Previously, at 8:00 a.m. on March 12, the emergency department of Vung Tau Hospital received female patient NNVA (14 years old, residing in Ward 7, Vung Tau City) in critical condition with cold skin, difficult to detect pulse, and unmeasurable blood pressure.

Upon examination, the doctors discovered a wound on the left sternum below the left collarbone about 3cm in length, the wound was about 1.5cm in size penetrating the chest. When the chest was opened, the wound was found to have penetrated from top to bottom, hitting the upper lobe of the left lung, perforating the front of the right atrium. The patient had a pericardial hematoma, losing 1,000ml of blood.

Doctors and nurses at Vung Tau Hospital focused all their efforts on rescuing the patient. The surgery lasted nearly 3 hours and the patient was transfused with two units of packed red blood cells and two units of plasma.

Thanks to that, the female student's life was saved in time. By March 13, the patient's health had stabilized.

Doctor Nguyen Van Binh - Head of General Surgery Department of Vung Tau Hospital - said that emergency heart surgery has its own characteristics, the most decisive issue is fast treatment time and coordination of many specialties.

Dr. Lam Tuan Tu - Deputy Director in charge of Vung Tau Hospital - said that heart injuries are urgent surgery, the time to save the patient's life is measured in seconds. In this case, there was close and harmonious coordination between many departments and specialties in the hospital.
