On July 13, in Can Tho City, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired a conference on the implementation of the two-level local government model; the progress of key transport projects; and the sustainable development project of 1 million hectares of specialized rice in the Mekong Delta.

At the meeting, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Tran Thanh Nam said that currently, localities in the Mekong Delta region have registered to participate in the project with a total area of 1.015 million hectares.

Since 2024, 7 pilot models have been deployed (each model covers 50 hectares) in 2 crops: summer-autumn and autumn-winter. In 2025, 5 new models will continue to be deployed.

In addition, localities proactively deployed 101 pilot models with a total area of more than 4,500 hectares.

Initial results of the high-quality, emission-reducing rice cultivation model bring clear benefits both economically and environmentally.

Specifically, by the end of June 2025, harvests at pilot models showed that production costs decreased by 8.2% - 24.2%; seed quantity decreased by 30 - 50%; chemical fertilizer decreased by 30 - 70kg/ha; average yield reached 7.1 tons/ha (4% higher than outside the model); guaranteed rice price was 200-300 VND/kg higher; profits were 27 to 28 million VND/ha (4.6 to 4.8 million VND/ha higher than outside the model); greenhouse gas emissions were reduced by an average of 2 - 12 tons of CO2 /ha...

The project currently has 620 participating cooperatives, with about 200 enterprises providing input and output. Of the 232,000 hectares deployed, about 68% of the area is linked to input and output consumption.

Deputy Minister Tran Thanh Nam also reported the good news that "in early 2025, Vietnam exported 500 tons of rice with the brand name "Low-emission Vietnamese Green Rice" to Japan, opening up new prospects for the Vietnamese rice industry.

At the conference, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh highly appreciated the initial results achieved by the project.

The Prime Minister said that the project is of great significance in ensuring food security and export. The project also ensures rice output for farmers, avoiding the situation of “good harvest, low price”; contributing to effectively responding to the current severe climate change situation, stabilizing people’s livelihoods.

In particular, the project will be one of the solutions to help enhance the Vietnamese rice brand in the international arena.

The Prime Minister directed relevant ministries, branches and localities to continue to complete the planning project in the third quarter of 2025; promote the advantages of rice products from the project to build the Vietnamese rice brand in the international market.

Along with that, mobilize resources and preferential policies to join hands in developing the project; take advantage of rice agreements to ensure output and increase income for farmers.
