Calling relations with Japan 'never stronger,' US confident election results will have no impact

Kyodo news agency quoted spokesman Matthew Miller as saying that the Tokyo-Washington alliance has been the "foundation of peace , security and prosperity" in the region and around the world for more than seven decades.

Affirming that the relationship between the two countries “has never been stronger,” Mr. Miller stressed: “I don’t see that alliance changing because of the outcome of any election, whether in the United States or in Japan.”

According to the diplomat , Washington will continue to cooperate with Tokyo on important global and regional issues, including strengthening the trilateral partnership with Seoul.

In April this year, US President Joe Biden declared that the US-Japan alliance was stronger than ever and that the two countries were cooperating closely in many areas to address global challenges. For its part, Prime Minister Ishiba's government has emphasized that the Japan-US alliance remains the pillar of Japan's foreign and security policy.

The statement by spokesman Miller was made at a press conference after Japan's ruling coalition led by Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru, consisting of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Komeito, lost its majority in the lower house of parliament in the general election on October 27, leaving the government of the Northeast Asian nation facing an uncertain political future.

Regarding the Japanese political situation, on the same day, Jiji Press reported that Senate President Otsuji Hidehisa informed the LDP of his decision to resign due to health reasons.

Accordingly, Mr. Otsuji, 84 years old, will remain a member of the Japanese Parliament until the end of his term in the summer of 2025. The LDP will soon decide on his successor at an extraordinary session of the Parliament, scheduled to be convened on November 11.
