Hundreds of Palestinians protest against Hamas in Gaza

(CLO) Hundreds of Palestinians took to the streets in the northern Gaza Strip, chanting anti-Hamas slogans and calling for an end to the conflict with Israel in the largest protest since the conflict broke out on October 7, 2023.

Videos circulating on social media on March 25 showed crowds of mostly men marching through the ruined streets of Beit Lahia, chanting "Hamas out" and "We want to live."

Some carried banners reading "Enough war" and "We don't want war". Similar protests also took place in the Jabalia refugee camp, where people burned tires to express their anger.

Witnesses said Hamas security forces in plain clothes quickly dispersed the crowd. Protesters told the press that they were tired of the conflict and asked: "If the solution is for Hamas to give up power, why don't they do it to protect the people?"

Although there have been small-scale protests in the past, this is the first time Hamas has faced such a large-scale, public opposition on its territory. Some Palestinians have been cautious about voicing their anti-Hamas views, fearing retaliation.

As the conflict continues and the humanitarian situation worsens, these protests could signal a shift in Gazans' attitudes toward the controlling forces.

Northern Gaza has been the hardest hit area in the 17-month conflict. Most buildings have been flattened and most residents have been displaced multiple times to escape the bombardment. The humanitarian situation has worsened since Israel suspended aid deliveries in early March in an effort to pressure Hamas to release hostages.
