On May 8, SF posted a video of a Russian Lancet drone attacking the air defense system of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The precise attack caused the air defense system to catch fire and be completely destroyed. The incident occurred on the territory of the Donetsk People's Republic (self-proclaimed).

The system was developed specifically for the Kiev forces by a joint team of the British Ministry of Defence and European defence giant MBDA over the course of four months. It consists of a twin launcher for the British-made ASRAAM missile along with a Hawkeye electro-optical guidance system. The air defence system is mounted on a Supacat HMT 600 armoured multi-purpose vehicle chassis.

The ASRAAM heat-seeking missile has a range of 25 km but only when launched from the air. The range is significantly reduced when launched from the ground.

The delivery of this temporary air defense system began last year. It is not yet clear how many systems are in service with the Kiev Armed Forces.

The system is capable of short-range air defense against attack helicopters, cruise missiles, and suicide drones. However, in this case, it failed against the Lancet drone.

The Lancet was developed by ZALA Aero, a subsidiary of Russian defense giant Kalashnikov Concern. The company produces two versions of the drone: the Izdeliye-52, which has an endurance of 30 minutes and a 1 kg warhead, and the larger Izdeliye-51, which has an endurance of 40 minutes and is equipped with a 3 kg warhead.

Ukrainian efforts to stop the drones with anti-aircraft fire, electronic warfare or other countermeasures have been largely unsuccessful.

According to Lostarmour.info, a website that tracks and records military losses, the Russian military has damaged or destroyed 147 air defense, radar, electronic warfare and communications systems using Lancet drones since the start of the special military operation in Ukraine.
