On the evening of July 29, the U23 Indonesia team lost 0-1 to U23 Vietnam in the final match of the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship right at home. This is the second consecutive time that U23 Indonesia lost to U23 Vietnam in the final match.
Speaking after the match, coach Gerald Vanenburg said: "I think it was a difficult match. We really had chances, but conceded a goal from a set piece.
But honestly, I believe the players played their hearts out. They worked very hard. I'm proud of the players. Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose. But we'll prepare for the next tournament."
"After this tournament, what is the most important improvement point for U23 Indonesia? How do you compare tournaments in Europe and ASEAN?", another question.
The Dutch coach replied: "If you watched Indonesia U23 play, I think they played well. But we still need to find a way to score more goals.
We had many chances, but scoring was difficult. I believe Indonesia's plan and performance were good. But in football, you have to score, so that's something we need to improve on.
If you look around, the spirit of the fans here is amazing. I am also grateful to all the people who supported the team. I feel that all of you (the media) have also supported the team very much.
But at the end of the day, this is football. Whether in Europe or Southeast Asia, we all play football to win."

"Jens Raven is the player who scored the most goals. But after the match against U23 Brunei, U23 Indonesia only scored from set pieces. What is the problem with the attack, sir?", the Indonesian reporter asked.
Coach Gerald Vanenburg replied: "I think it's unfair to talk about that. We know we didn't score many goals. But I think the players gave their all.
If I have to talk about it, I will talk to them directly, I never speak badly about my players. We win together, we lose together. So it would be unfair to blame the players. We need to improve, and I believe this team has enough quality to develop."
"What would you say to the more than 35,000 disappointed fans after the defeat?", the reporter asked.
Coach Gerald Vanenburg said: "I believe the fans really support us. They saw that we gave our all. Indonesia U23 showed that we want to win the match. They also proved that they always support us, and we really need that.
Thanks everyone. I'm sorry about this result."
