According to Hungary's Minister for European Affairs Janos Boka, the country's priorities during its presidency of the European Council focus on areas that Budapest considers to be in greatest need of change, such as: boosting the EU's competitiveness, helping to strengthen the foundations for prosperity, jobs and economic growth of the bloc; strengthening the EU's security and defence policy; managing the migrant crisis by strengthening the EU's external borders and strengthening international partnerships.

According to Minister Boka, Hungary assumes the role of President of the EU Council in the context of the EU facing common challenges. Therefore, Hungary's presidency "must serve peace , security and the search for real solutions to the problems of the European Union".

According to Tass, Hungary has disagreements with the EU leadership on a number of issues, including the conflict in Ukraine and the migration issue. When announcing his agenda for his term, Hungarian President Orban stressed that a quick end to the conflict in Ukraine is the most important point. EU enlargement is also an important item on Hungary's agenda.
