Hungary reveals ratification date for Sweden, warns of serious consequences if Ukraine joins

On July 13, Chairman of the Hungarian Parliamentary Committee Zsolt Nemeth announced that Sweden's application to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will be approved by the country's parliament in mid-September 2023, as it is difficult to convene a session earlier.

According to Mr. Nemeth, holding an extraordinary session of parliament is “unnecessary”.

“The Turkish parliament will meet on October 1. At a press conference yesterday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan made it clear that he wants the ratification of Sweden’s NATO membership to be on the agenda of the next parliamentary session with a higher priority. Therefore, we will start working on it in mid-September,” he said.

On July 10, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and President Erdogan agreed that Ankara would forward Sweden's accession process to parliament and would work closely to ensure ratification.

Ratification is now “just a technical matter,” according to Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.

In another development, on July 14, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban warned that inviting Ukraine to join NATO would lead to a “world war,” so the allies made the right decision to refrain from this issue at the NATO Summit in Vilnius, Lithuania.

Although most Western countries do not want the Russia-Ukraine conflict to continue, according to the head of Hungary, the conflict will last and Budapest will be prepared for that.
