Gunman killed after killing one person at US hospital

No one else, including the trooper who confronted the suspect, was injured in the gun violence that occurred around 3:30 p.m. Friday at New Hampshire State Hospital, according to police Col. Mark Hall.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference later, Hall declined to provide any information about the suspect or the victim, saying investigators were still trying to identify the attacker.

Hall said the bomb squad was also investigating a suspicious vehicle on hospital grounds but did not provide further details. “All patients and staff at the hospital are safe,” said Lori Weaver, commissioner of the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services.

The shooting happened quickly. Hall said that shortly after the suspect entered the hallway and shot one person, “a nearby state trooper was dispatched to the hospital and immediately engaged and shot the suspect. The entire incident took place in the lobby of the hospital.”

Hall said backup officers were on the scene within minutes, adding that a police academy graduation ceremony was taking place on the surrounding campus at the time.

According to WMUR-TV, the hospital is a secure inpatient psychiatric facility where all visitors must enter through metal detectors and police are always on duty.
