Lao Cai: Isolating and monitoring 1 case with diphtheria-like symptoms

Information from Lao Cai province said that recently Bao Thang District General Hospital ( Lao Cai ) received a case with symptoms similar to those of a person with diphtheria.

The patient is MTV (born in 1969, female, residing in Nhai Tho village, Kim Son commune, Bao Yen district, Lao Cai province) with symptoms of cough, fever, and symptoms of tongue, palate, and oral cavity with many white-yellow spots or patches.

Recently, the patient also had a sore throat with a high fever of 39 degrees Celsius, and many pseudomembranes appeared in the mouth. The medical agency diagnosed pneumonia, suspected of diphtheria.

However, the results of paraclinical examination at Bao Thang District General Hospital showed that the patient was positive for yeast and filamentous fungi, but X-ray and ultrasound showed no abnormalities.

However, because diphtheria is re-emerging in some places, Bao Thang District Medical Center reported to Lao Cai Provincial Center for Disease Control (CDC) to take samples from this patient to send to the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (Hanoi) for examination and testing to see if he has diphtheria.

Currently, there are no test results, but local health authorities have isolated the patient at Bao Thang District General Hospital and are conducting an epidemiological investigation of close contacts.

The results showed that only 23 people had close contact with the MVT patient (including 12 medical staff and 11 family members). The number of contacts was not large because the patient had been thin for a long time, self-treated at home, and had little contact with the outside world. Currently, those who had close contact with the patient are still in normal health and are being monitored by health authorities.

According to the Lao Cai Provincial CDC, the possibility of diphtheria infection in MVT patients is low, but given the current diphtheria situation, health agencies still need to take precautions and control early.
