In a statement, the Pentagon said the contract requires OpenAI to develop “prototype-level advanced AI capabilities to address major national security threats in both the operational and combat domains.”
The project will be implemented primarily in the Washington, D.C. area and is expected to be completed in July 2026.
Earlier in April, the White House Office of Management and Budget issued new guidance requiring federal agencies to ensure that the government and the public benefit from a competitive AI market in the U.S. However, this guidance does not apply to systems related to defense and national security.
As for OpenAI, last week the company announced it had hit $10 billion in revenue, putting it on track to meet its 2025 target amid a boom in AI applications. In March, OpenAI announced plans to raise $40 billion in a SoftBank-led funding round that valued the company at $300 billion. By the end of the first quarter, the platform had reached 500 million weekly active users, a dream number for many companies.
