Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) said that the US should solve the migration problem by increasing investment in Latin American countries, instead of building walls and militarizing the border area between the two countries.

In a speech at Zócalo Square in Mexico City on September 1, Mexican President AMLO said that the government is implementing many social programs such as "Sowing Life" in Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Haiti, Venezuela, Colombia, Belize and Cuba to help people in these countries improve their lives and contribute to preventing the wave of migration.

According to Mr. AMLO, those are the best support measures to solve the migration problem, not by building a border wall or militarizing that area.

The Mexican president called on the US to join hands to address the root causes of the migration wave, while supporting the development of poor countries in the Central American and Caribbean regions.

According to Mr. AMLO, the migration issue is gaining attention as political parties in the US are increasingly proposing to solve the crisis ahead of the US presidential election scheduled to take place in November.

During the election campaign, Republican candidate Donald Trump warned that he would carry out mass deportations of immigrants if he became US President, while Democratic candidate Kamala Harris also pledged to sign a reform program that would allow the deportation of many immigrants to Mexico.

Statistics show that although the number of daily arrests of illegal migrants at the US-Mexico border has decreased by more than 70% since December 2023, the number of illegal migrants from countries traveling to Mexico to the US in the first 6 months of this year still reached a record 712,000 people, an increase of 193% compared to the same period last year.
