US technology corporation Microsoft said it will lay off thousands of employees, and this is the third round of cuts in recent months.

A Microsoft spokesperson said the layoffs will affect less than 4% of its total workforce, or about 9,000 people.

This is Microsoft's biggest layoff since cutting 10,000 employees in 2023 and comes as many other technology companies are also reducing staff.

Microsoft is cutting down on management layers and using new technology to improve employee productivity, a Microsoft spokesperson said.

The layoffs come as tech companies, including Microsoft, use artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the efficiency of their workforces.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said earlier this year that 20% to 30% of the company's code is generated by AI, and the company is investing billions of dollars in AI infrastructure.

Microsoft reportedly plans to lay off 3% of its workforce. It’s unclear whether AI directly contributed to the July 2 layoffs or which parts of Microsoft will be affected.

The July 2 layoffs come after Microsoft laid off about 7,000 employees, or 3% of its workforce, by May 2025.

As of July 2024, when Microsoft last reported its total headcount, the company had 228,000 employees.

Several other tech companies have also made layoffs this year, including Meta and Bumble. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy warned employees last month that AI would eventually help the company reduce its headcount.

Microsoft said in April 2025 that profit increased 18% to $25.8 billion in the three months ended March 31, thanks to strong performance in cloud services and AI./.
