Russia opposes US taking $20 billion in frozen aid to Ukraine

(CLO) The Russian Foreign Ministry has condemned the US decision to use $20 billion from frozen Russian assets to aid Ukraine, calling it an act of "blatant theft".

In a statement on its official website, the Russian Foreign Ministry stressed: "The US Treasury has announced that it will disburse another aid package to the bankrupt regime of (President Volodymyr) Zelenskyy. This $20 billion was taken from Russia's sovereign frozen assets, and was essentially stolen by the G7. This is nothing less than outright theft."

The Russian Foreign Ministry warned that the theft of Russian assets would have serious consequences, further undermining the “rules-based order” that the US and its Western allies are trying to maintain. It stressed that this “order” was gradually losing credibility and “sinking into oblivion”.

In addition, the Russian Foreign Ministry also criticized the administration of President Joe Biden, accusing them of taking advantage of the remaining time in their term to disburse aid to Ukraine and impose more sanctions against Russia, despite the economic difficulties that the US itself is facing.

"Russia has all the tools and capabilities to seize Western assets on its territory. These assets will be used to boost industrial potential and implement infrastructure projects in Russian regions," the statement stressed.
