South Korea's opposition Democratic Party (DP) leader Lee Jae-myung called on the Constitutional Court to take 'swift' action to remove President Yoon Suk Yeol.

Speaking at a press conference on December 15, Mr. Lee Jae-myung said that the early removal of President Yoon is the only way “to minimize the country’s chaos.” The Constitutional Court will have 180 days to decide whether to remove Mr. Yoon based on the impeachment decision of the National Assembly , or the South Korean president will be reinstated, Yonhap reported.

Leader of the Democratic Party of Korea Lee Jae-myung speaks at a rally on December 14.

In the face of political turmoil in South Korea, Mr. Lee on December 15 proposed the establishment of a consultative body between the National Assembly and the government to stabilize the state. “It is urgent to bring South Korea back to normalcy . The Democratic Party will actively cooperate with all political parties to stabilize the state and restore international trust,” Mr. Lee said. However, the proposal of the DP leader was rejected by the ruling People Power Party (PPP).

Lee Jae-myung added that the DP will not seek to impeach acting President Han Duck-soo, stressing that multiple impeachments could lead to chaos in state affairs.

In a related development, South Korean National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik met with Han Duck-soo on December 15, calling on the government and parliament to work together to overcome the unrest following the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol on December 14. Han, who is also South Korea's prime minister, said the government would make decisions based on the constitution, laws and the country's future, and pledged to resolve the current situation quickly.

Also on December 15, Yonhap reported that the special prosecutor team investigating the case of Yoon Suk Yeol declaring martial law said they had sent a request to summon Yoon for questioning at 10 a.m. on December 15, but the South Korean president did not show up. The prosecutors plan to send another request as soon as possible.
