The movie 'Southern Forest Land' causes controversy, what does writer Doan Gioi's family say?

As of noon on October 21, the film Dat Rung Phuong Nam had earned 81.3 billion VND, according to data from independent box office statistics unit Box Office Vietnam. Of which, more than half of the revenue (more than 43 billion VND) was earned from early screenings.

Sharing with Tien Phong, Mr. Nguyen Khanh Duong, founder of Box Office Vietnam, said that the film had a low theater occupancy rate, and the controversy may have had a certain impact on sales. "In essence, from the beginning, we did not expect the film to explode like Tran Thanh's two recent works, Nha Ba Nu and Bo Gia, " said Mr. Nguyen Khanh Duong.

Amidst the online community's controversy over the film Southern Forest Land , Mr. Ton Gia Van (son-in-law of writer Doan Gioi, author of the original novel Southern Forest Land ) represented his family to share his thoughts on the film.

Mr. Ton Gia Van said his family was "terribly sad" because of the controversy surrounding the film. " My wife and I were invited to the premiere of the film Dat Rung Phuong Nam as representatives of the family of writer Doan Gioi. In the past few days, we have been terribly sad because of the article posted online," he shared.

Representative of writer Doan Gioi's family shared his views, hoping that the audience would look towards good things.

"As a descendant of writer Doan Gioi, I would like to say a few words on behalf of the family. We think that Mr. Gioi also agrees with our point of view of being generous and kind-hearted," he added.

The film Southern Forest has been controversial since its release. Initially, the work received many comments about the special effects, costumes, character designs and makeup, typically the roles of Uncle Ba Phi (Tran Thanh) and Vo Tong (Mai Tai Phen).

In addition, the film was also controversial because its content was considered “historically incorrect”. The film crew had to submit edited content to the Cinema Department, changing the names of the Thien Dia Hoi - Nghia Hoa Doan groups.

Southern Forest Land is directed by Nguyen Quang Dung, with Tran Thanh's participation in production. The film was released in the low season (September-October), plus mixed opinions, so the revenue did not really explode, it is decreasing, the theater occupancy rate is not really impressive.

"Compared to Tran Thanh's other works, Dat Rung Phuong Nam has an occupancy rate of 1/2 of Bo Gia, leading to sales after the first week being only half of Bo Gia. Compared to the box office hit of the same period last year, Bong Dung Thang So, Dat Rung Phuong Nam also has a lower occupancy rate," said Mr. Duong.
