Alligators raised at Maoming City farm weigh at least 100 kg

Maoming City authorities are launching a campaign to hunt down a large number of escaped crocodiles after Typhoon Haikui caused flooding in the area in recent days, according to the Global Times on September 12.

Authorities are trying to track the crocodiles using sonar equipment, while reminding residents to be cautious when leaving their homes. Fishing is also banned and people are warned to stay away from rivers and lakes.

In a video clip shared on social media on September 11, several crocodiles appeared on the road, near a village lake.

According to locals, each crocodile raised on the farm weighs at least 100 kg. Once discovered, the authorities will shoot the crocodiles to death for safety reasons.

"We are trying to control the situation but the number of crocodiles on the loose is quite large," a local official said. According to initial information, there are 69 adult crocodiles and 6 baby crocodiles outside.

Up to now, there has been no information about any cases affected by people encountering crocodiles.

A manager at a crocodile farm in Maoming City said the breeding area is usually surrounded by 3-meter-high walls and wire mesh. He said the storm caused flooding that destroyed the surrounding walls, allowing the crocodiles to escape en masse.
