On June 7, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had a phone call with European Council President Charles Michel.

“It is necessary to increase contacts at all levels, with a specific and positive agenda, towards the goal of Türkiye becoming a full member of the EU,” Erdogan said in a statement from the Turkish Presidential Office.

According to the leader, Brussels' "supportive stance and fair treatment" towards Ankara's EU accession efforts will open new horizons for bilateral relations.

During the phone call, President Erdogan also stressed the importance of upgrading the customs union agreement between Ankara and Brussels, ensuring visa-free travel for Turkish citizens in the EU and strengthening bilateral cooperation on migration management and counter-terrorism.

Turkey began negotiations to join the EU in 2005. However, the process stalled for several years following a prolonged state of emergency imposed by President Erdogan following a failed coup against his government in 2016.
