On May 27, Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio said he was willing to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to seek a solution to the issue of Japanese citizens abducted in the 1960s and 1970s.

Prime Minister Kishida has pledged to build a relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, to resolve the issue of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea.

“I am willing to meet Kim Jong-un face to face without any conditions,” Kishida said at an event on the issue in Tokyo. The Mainichi Shimbun, Nikkei and Kyodo news agencies all reported the news.

In 2002, Pyongyang admitted to kidnapping 13 Japanese citizens decades ago. Five of them and their families have been returned to Japan, and the others have died. However, Tokyo believes 17 Japanese citizens are still being held and continues to investigate the fate of those who have not yet returned.

Meanwhile, North Korea has repeatedly asserted that the issue of Japanese citizens abducted in the past "has already been resolved."
