President Biden pardons his son

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên02/12/2024

US President Joe Biden on December 1 pardoned his son Hunter Biden, a decision that goes against his previous statements.

The Washington Post reported on December 1 that Mr. Biden used executive power to pardon his son Hunter, who was convicted of gun possession charges in Delaware and previously pleaded guilty to tax evasion in California.

"Today, I signed a pardon for my son Hunter. From the day I took office, I said I would not interfere with the decision-making process of the United States Department of Justice . I kept that promise even as I witnessed my son being selectively and unfairly prosecuted," the White House said in a statement. Biden pardoned the crimes in the two cases above.

“No rational person looking at the facts of Hunter’s case could conclude anything other than that Hunter was being criticized simply because he was my son. I hope the American people will understand why a father, and a president, would make this decision,” Biden added.

Biden has repeatedly said he will not pardon his son this year, but observers believe that this statement is intended to prevent potential harm to the Democratic Party's campaign. Now that the results are in, President Biden's move is expected to have little political consequence as his term is coming to an end.

Hunter Biden was convicted by a Delaware federal jury in June of lying on a 2018 gun purchase form, claiming he had not used illegal drugs. US authorities later found that he had been using drugs while in possession of the weapon. In September, Hunter also pleaded guilty to nine federal tax charges.

President Biden has repeatedly expressed pride in his son Hunter’s sobriety, and Hunter has appeared in several of his father’s key moments this year.
