Green Hmong folk culture

The Green Hmong are one of four Hmong subgroups in Lao Cai, living mainly in Nam Xe commune, Van Ban district with a population of about 1,000 people. Authors Duong Tuan Nghia and Nguyen Ngoc Thanh (co-editors) published the book Folklore of the Green Hmong in Lao Cai (Volume 1) published by Hanoi National University Publishing House in the fourth quarter of 2023. The author has more than twenty years of research on the culture of the Green Hmong in Nam Xe commune, Van Ban district.

The book has 431 pages, including an introduction and 6 chapters. After the introduction to the book are 6 chapters (Chapter 1: The Green Hmong in Vietnam; Chapter 2: Folk knowledge in livelihood; Chapter 3: Customs in childbirth and child-rearing; Chapter 4: Traditional wedding customs; Chapter 5: Traditional funeral customs; Chapter 6: Worship beliefs in the community.

Along with the book's content is a photo appendix provided by the author, the photo content reflects the landscape of the village; the wedding scene, some folk games such as swing, spinning top, walking on stilts, playing bird's nest - chicken badminton; singing on the tube, singing love songs, the altar of the shaman, the Green Hmong women's costumes, the ritual of inviting ancestors, the ritual of naming children, the Khen dance on Tet holiday...

The book "Folklore of the Green Hmong in Lao Cai" (volume 1) is published to bring to readers, cultural researchers, people, and those who are passionate about ethnic culture, especially the Green Hmong.

In chapter 1, the author introduces the historical origin, residential area, ethnicity, population and general economic , cultural and social characteristics of the Green Hmong people. Chapter 2 introduces livelihood activities such as hunting, gathering, slash-and-burn farming and some rituals related to agricultural production. Chapter 3 introduces the customs of childbirth and child rearing, taboos before and after birth, naming ceremonies, and care and education of children according to age.

Chapter 4 reflects the entire process of organizing a wedding from the beginning of getting to know each other until the bride is brought to the groom's house, the rules and rituals in the traditional wedding ceremony, collecting and introducing some folk songs in the wedding ceremony with profound humanity, introducing wedding costumes. Chapter 5 reflects funeral customs from the preparation for the funeral, the rituals performed, the process of organizing when someone in the family dies, the rituals of worshiping the deceased, some songs of mourning for the deceased, some taboos in the funeral. Chapter 6 talks about worship in the community, ancestor worship, rituals related to building a new house, cooking... and introduces the holidays and traditional games of the year of the Green Hmong people.
