The Zambian government has announced that the start of the new school year across the country will be delayed by three weeks due to a cholera outbreak.

According to the original plan, schools were scheduled to open on January 8. However, in the context of cholera cases increasing in most regions of the country, this plan was adjusted, children across the country will start going to school from January 29.

The cholera outbreak has affected 16 African countries in the past two years. Bloomberg news agency cited the latest figures from the Zambian government, saying that more than 4,100 cholera cases and 150 deaths have been reported in the southern African country since October 2023. Education Minister Douglas Syakalima stressed that the government prioritizes ensuring public health, especially in schools, to avoid the negative impact of the epidemic on the education sector.
