India successfully test-fired nuclear-capable short-range ballistic missiles, including Prithvi-II and Agni-I, from the integrated test range off the Odisha coast on July 17.

This is an important step to strengthen the strategic deterrence capability of this South Asian country.

According to a statement from the Indian Ministry of Defense , the launches conducted by the Strategic Forces Command (SFC) have validated all the technical specifications and operational features of the missile system.

The successful test-firing of these two missiles is a clear demonstration of the readiness and effectiveness of India's strategic deterrence systems.

The Prithvi-II missile has a range of about 350km and can carry a warhead of up to 500kg, while the Agni-I has a range of 700-900km and can carry a payload of up to 1,000kg. Both are capable of carrying nuclear warheads and are key components of India's nuclear deterrent triad.

A day earlier (July 16), India also successfully tested the Akash Prime air defense system in the Ladakh region. The test was conducted at an altitude of over 4,500 meters, near the Line of Actual Control (LAC), in the context of military tensions with neighboring countries that have not yet cooled down.

Akash Prime is an upgraded version of the Akash air defence missile system, designed for the Indian Army and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

In testing, the system successfully destroyed two high-speed unmanned aerial targets.

According to the Ministry of Defense, the new version is integrated with a radio frequency seeker (RF seeker) developed by India itself and many improvements based on actual feedback from the using force.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Army and defence industry partners, calling it a “remarkable achievement” that demonstrates the self-reliance of India’s defence sector.

The missile tests come just over two months after a brief military conflict between India and Pakistan, highlighting the growing role of strategic weapons systems in a complex regional security context./.
