Azerbaijan prepares for joint military exercises with allies near border with Armenia

Azerbaijan's defense ministry announced on October 23 that its military had begun joint exercises with its ally Turkey near the border with Armenia, weeks after Baku recaptured the Nagorno-Karabakh region from Armenian separatists.

According to the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry, the drills will be held in Baku, the Nakhchivan enclave between Iran and Armenia, as well as territories recaptured from Armenian separatists, with the participation of about 3,000 soldiers.

Last week, on October 17, Baku announced that it would hold joint military exercises with Ankara from October 23-25, to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Turkey.

Nakhchivan borders Turkey and Iran, but is geographically separated from Azerbaijan by Armenia. In September, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev held talks with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Nakhchivan, less than a week after Baku launched a military operation against the Armenian-controlled breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh.

At the meeting, the Azerbaijani leader received President Erdogan's support for the proposal to create a land corridor connecting western Azerbaijan with Nakhchivan via Armenia - a country that remains opposed to this plan.
