This new regulation is included in Government Decree 207, effective from October 1, marking a major step forward in the reproductive rights of single women in Vietnam.
Previously, Decree 10/2015 stipulated that single women had the right to give birth using in vitro fertilization (IVF) when prescribed by a specialist. Now, as long as they have the desire, they are eligible to perform this assisted reproductive technique.
Thus, this new regulation expands the right to be a mother, no longer bound by medical reasons, more suitable to modern social trends and the personal needs of single women. In fact, many women today do not want to get married, even want to be single mothers.
The new decree also stipulates that single women have the right to receive embryos when they do not have ova (eggs) or the ova are not of sufficient quality to conceive.
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Viet Tien, former Deputy Minister of Health, Chairman of the Vietnam Obstetrics and Gynecology Association, said that in fact, single women have been using IVF to have children for many years. With this method, doctors take the woman's eggs and use them with anonymous sperm to create embryos. Anonymous sperm is a sperm sample donated in a sperm bank, ensuring the principle of confidentiality.
As at the Center for Reproductive Support and Transplant Technology, Hanoi Medical University Hospital, the trend of single women actively freezing their eggs (also known as egg storage) has increased rapidly in recent years. About 5 years ago, the need for egg storage was not common, only applied to infertile couples. A few cases stored eggs before endocrine treatment or breast or ovarian cancer, with 30-50 cases per year. In the past three years, the number of women actively storing eggs has increased. On average, this center stores eggs for 100 cases per year, mostly single women.
Similarly, many other fertility centers have also recorded an increasing number of single women depositing eggs to wait for childbirth. For example, the Post Office Hospital stores eggs for about 350 cases, receiving an average of 5-7 cases per month.
Egg freezing is a method used to preserve a woman's ability to conceive. Eggs taken from the ovaries will be frozen and stored for a long time, when necessary, they will be thawed, artificially fertilized with sperm to form embryos and implanted into the woman's uterus. Thanks to egg freezing, women can conceive, become mothers and give birth to healthy children even after the appropriate age.
IVF has been performed in Vietnam since 1998, and to date, over 150,000 children have been born using this technique, and over 400 children have been born using surrogacy for humanitarian purposes, according to the Ministry of Health. Currently, there are over 50 reproductive support facilities nationwide, mastering many advanced techniques in the world, and the success rate of IVF treatment is increasing, reaching 70%.
