Sentenced to prison after stealing nearly 120,000 bitcoins

The stolen bitcoins were worth just $70 million when Lichtenstein hacked the Bitfinex network and initiated more than 2,000 unauthorized transactions to withdraw the digital currency. That bitcoin is now worth $10.5 billion, given the price of bitcoin has risen since 2016.

Lichtenstein and Heather Rhiannon Morgan

Lichtenstein, 35, and his wife, Heather Rhiannon Morgan, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering in August 2023, about 18 months after their arrest in New York City, where they live. Morgan is scheduled to be sentenced on November 18 in Washington DC.
