According to preliminary results announced on the evening of February 25, the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) won a resounding victory in the Senate election, winning more than 50 out of a total of 58 seats.
According to Khmer Times, up to 125 lawmakers and 11,622 commune councilors registered to vote for members of the Senate for the fifth term. According to preliminary results from the National Election Committee (NEC), the CPP won the majority over the remaining three political parties, the Khmer Will Party, Funcinpec Party and National Power Party, with 99.86% of voters turning out on February 25.
According to Mr. Prach Chan, Chairman of NEC, the Senate election was held in a peaceful atmosphere, without violence and any obstruction.
While waiting for the official results, CPP spokesman Sok Eysan said it was a “resounding victory” for the CPP, which won “more than 50 seats out of a total of 58.” After casting his vote at Preah Sisowath High School in Phnom Penh on the morning of February 25, Prime Minister Hun Manet said the four parties contesting the fifth legislative Senate election had been “free, fair and transparent in a peaceful and non-violent environment.”
Meanwhile, CPP President and former Prime Minister Hun Sen cast his vote in Takhmao City, Kandal Province. With the CPP’s victory, Hun Sen is expected to become Senate President. According to the NEC, the official results of the Senate election will be available in the next few weeks.
The Cambodian Senate has 62 seats, equal to 50% of the current National Assembly seats. Senate elections in Cambodia are conducted under non-universal suffrage, with 58 Senators elected by ballot from incumbent National Assembly members and ward and commune councilors. Of the remaining 4 seats, 2 are appointed by the King of Cambodia and 2 are nominated by the National Assembly through a confidence vote process.
