RMIT University Vietnam has a new general director

(Dan Tri) - RMIT University Vietnam announced that it has just appointed Professor Scott Thompson-Whiteside as its general director, marking the 25th anniversary of the university's contribution to learning, development and community in Vietnam.

With a long and established leadership experience in higher education in Australia, Asia and the UK, Professor Thompson-Whiteside has an outstanding record of academic governance, enhancing the student experience and promoting research excellence.

He has held a number of senior leadership positions including Dean of Torrens University, Provost, Deputy Dean (International) and Dean of Swinburne University of Technology (both in Australia), and Deputy Director (Academic) at Limkokwing University of Creative Technology (Malaysia).

In each role, Professor Thompson-Whiteside provided forward-thinking leadership to grow student numbers, increase retention and enhance the student experience, while improving research, reputation and rankings for each of these higher education institutions.

Professor Thompson-Whiteside has demonstrated outstanding strategic leadership and a commitment to effective governance and operations management. He has led several departments and schools in implementing innovative teaching methods, combining online and blended learning models. He also focuses on practical learning experiences and authentic assessment with industry connections.

Professor Thompson-Whiteside holds a PhD in Higher Education from the University of Melbourne, where he focuses on academic standards and quality in the context of internationalisation and massification of higher education. With a distinguished career in higher education academia and management, he is expected to lead RMIT University Vietnam into a new phase of development.

“I am honoured to be appointed as President of RMIT Vietnam. I look forward to working with the talented and dedicated staff here to continue delivering high-quality education and research that will have a real impact in Vietnam and beyond,” Professor Thompson-Whiteside said.

Professor Thompson-Whiteside’s appointment comes at an important time for the University as it celebrates 25 years of providing international education in Vietnam and prepares to launch many promising plans for the future.

During his first week as CEO, he stressed the importance of listening to faculty and students, understanding local contexts and building a future-ready university that values innovation, inclusivity and community engagement.

“We are here to serve the community, students and businesses. We look forward to working with governments at all levels to enhance human resource capacity and promote Vietnam’s economic and social development,” he said.

Since its establishment in 2000, RMIT University Vietnam has developed into a leading international university, contributing to the development of Vietnam through education, research and industry collaboration.

After 25 years, the school has built a strong community of more than 12,000 students, 1,300 faculty and nearly 25,500 alumni. The school continues to make a profound and lasting impact on Vietnamese education: empowering learners, supporting businesses and shaping the future of education.
