Local police confirmed the death toll, including five soldiers and five civilians. However, this may not be the final number as many people were seriously injured.

No organization or individual has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. Authorities suspect the Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab was behind it.

In recent times, the town of Beledweyne has seen frequent clashes between the army and Al-Shabaab gunmen.

The group is a branch of the international terrorist network Al-Qaeda, which has waged a bloody insurgency against the Somali government for more than 15 years.

Although African Union (AU) forces have driven Al-Shabaab from Somalia's major towns and cities, the jihadists still control large swaths of rural territory and continue to carry out attacks on security and civilian targets.
