Training school counselors on gender - physical and sexual safety

The training program for gender, physical and sexual safety school counselors, coordinated by the Center for Children and Development (CCD) and the Institute of Population, Family and Children, recently took place in Hanoi. With the participation of nearly 50 teachers, school counselors from 6 high schools in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Quang Binh and a network of sex education specialists from provinces and cities in the three regions of the North, Central and South.

The 3-day program (November 9-11, 2023) is co-organized by the Center for Children and Development (CCD) and the Institute for Population, Family and Children (IPFCS). It aims to promote children's participation in developing codes of conduct in educational institutions from a gender perspective and to enhance communication capacity and contribute to the development of laws on gender and sexuality.

The training program for school counselors on gender, physical safety and sexuality aims to: Provide basic knowledge about gender and physical safety, sexuality: gender, gender and gender roles, reproductive health, sexual health, sexual safety. Relationships: friendship, love, violence, abuse: physical safety, sexual harassment and abuse. Principles of child protection at 3 levels and child-friendly laws. Procedures for intervention and assistance in protecting children in schools; Counseling and school counseling skills related to gender and sexuality, including the process of referring to professional support services.

Develop a Child Protection Policy to protect privacy with steps to handle media crises on social media and the press to protect employees and children based on implementing Children's Rights.

The program not only discusses the art of evoking stories and emotions, the training program also provides a lot of modern knowledge about gender awareness and sexual behavior, violence and physical safety, lectures on communication skills and building healthy relationships, stages of child development and appropriate educational pathways.

Along with that, through many forms such as learning about the law on children's rights and gender, sexuality, describing common situations in the lives of children in need of protection, students will have a firm grasp of skills in identifying subjects, age ranges in need of protection, describing common situations in the lives of children in need of protection, understanding the basic principles and roles of case managers...

Practical lessons, consulting skills, and school counseling from experts will be the basis for students to develop action plans and communicate on child protection policies - gender and sexual communication, become experts in analyzing cases based on children's rights, implementing steps to handle communication crises related to gender and sexuality, and be ready to participate in supporting the community.

Ms. Le Thi Thu Ha - CCD representative said that through the training program, CCD hopes that the Teenyeeu Sex Education Project will continue to support and accompany parents and teachers, be a bridge to enhance the role of gender education and sexual safety between families and schools in the process of accompanying teenagers, promoting the development of the Teenyeeu 24h Club model nationwide.

CCD will continue to coordinate with the Light Institute for Community Health Development, the Center for Legal Advice and Policy Research (CLAP), and IPFCS to implement the Project's activities in the coming time to achieve the following goals: Raising children's awareness to identify the relationship between codes of conduct in schools and families related to legal regulations on gender and sexuality, forming a network of collaborators/school psychology counselors with knowledge of gender and sexuality laws for minors, promoting children's participation in giving comments on the draft Law on Gender Equality and communication on gender and sexuality.

The program is part of the project "Teenyeeu 24h Club Model" to promote children's participation in building codes of conduct in educational institutions from a gender perspective and to improve communication capacity and contribute to the development of laws on gender and sexuality".

This is an initiative under the Teenyeeu Project, a program initiated by the Center for Children and Development (CCD) since 2018 with training programs on gender and essential life skills for children, teachers and parents.

The program is in collaboration with the Light Institute for Community Health Development and the Center for Legal Advice and Policy Research (CLAP), within the framework of the Justice Initiative Promotion Fund programs managed by Oxfam in Vietnam, and is one of two components of the project "Strengthening Law and Justice in Vietnam" funded by the European Union, aiming to contribute to strengthening the rule of law in Vietnam through a reliable and accessible justice system.
