According to Kyodo (Japan), leaders of the Quad group including the US, India, Japan and Australia are expected to agree to expand maritime cooperation when they meet on September 21.
A senior official in the administration of US President Joe Biden said the Quad leaders would "demonstrate ever-closer strategic alignment among Quad partners" through ongoing projects in areas ranging from maritime security and infrastructure to disaster response and emerging technologies.
"The most important thing is that the Quad will continue to exist in the long term," Kyodo quoted the unnamed official as saying, expressing confidence that the group will share a vision for a free and open Indo- Pacific region that will last for years beyond President Joe Biden's term.
During the Quad summit in Wilmington, Delaware, leaders will agree on a number of new initiatives, including the start of joint coast guard exercises.
In addition, the leaders will agree to share cargo space on planes and ships for humanitarian relief and disaster response missions, Kyodo reported.
According to Yonhap , the Quad summit will also discuss the Korean Peninsula and the situation in the East Sea. The meeting takes place amid growing concerns about the growing nuclear and ballistic missile threat from North Korea as well as recent tensions in the East Sea.
