Let “Happy School” not just be a slogan in the new school year

Entering the 2025-2026 school year, the Education sector has clearly identified that “Happy School” cannot be just a slogan. To realize this, ensuring school safety is a top priority, from preventing school violence, injuries, drowning to food safety and mental health.

Many risks still exist

The reality from the 2024-2025 school year shows that many risks of insecurity still exist, requiring attention, drastic and synchronous direction from the whole society.

Accordingly, the work of ensuring safety in schools has been seriously implemented by the departments of education and training, especially in areas such as preventing accidents, injuries, drowning, food safety and student health.

The Ministry of Education and Training has also provided guidance documents for integrating into the curriculum appropriate to each grade level. Localities have stepped up training for swimming teachers, with 100% of education and training departments sending key teachers to attend training courses organized by the Ministry. However, the percentage of students who know how to swim is only 33.75%. Only about 8.6% of schools have swimming pools - a number that is too low compared to actual needs.

To ensure nutrition and food safety in school meals, many schools apply nutritional balance software, focusing on boarding meals.

However, there were still 3 food poisoning cases in the first 5 months of 2025, affecting 58 students, mainly due to outside meals or unsafe food around the school gate. Management and supervision of boarding meals still have many difficulties due to lack of specific standards.

The prevention and control of school violence has recorded many efforts with initial positive results. The number of school violence incidents decreased by 20.6% compared to the 2022-2023 school year, the number of students involved decreased by 24.2%. However, cyberbullying has increased with 28 cases recorded in just the first 5 months of 2025, the actual number is predicted to be higher due to the difficulty in detecting and intervening.

Traffic accidents involving students are still a big problem. According to statistics from the Ministry of Public Security , within one year from December 21, 2023 to December 21, 2024, there were more than 4,100 traffic accidents involving students, accounting for nearly 17.5% of the total number of cases nationwide.

Many students violate traffic laws such as not wearing helmets, driving underage, running red lights... Behavioral change is not really sustainable, requiring continued promotion of legal education in schools.

In addition, the use of e-cigarettes and drugs by students is also a cause for concern. The proportion of 13-15 year old students who have used e-cigarettes has doubled in one year (from 3.5% to 8%), with the proportion of female students using them increasing. The reason is determined to be the easy access to products through social networks and stores near schools.

The key to reducing violence

Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son emphasized that the school environment is no longer a closed space, isolated from society. Traditional walls are gradually fading under the impact of social networks and modern media. Therefore, ensuring safety in schools must be approached comprehensively and practically, with close coordination between schools, families and the community.

According to Minister Nguyen Kim Son, if we want children to stop being violent towards each other, first of all, adults in society must be role models. According to industry data, 70% of students who commit violent acts come from special family circumstances - parents divorced, domestic violence or lack of care. Therefore, moral education cannot stop in the classroom, but needs to be nurtured from every home.

On the part of the education sector, the main solutions implemented include: Completing the legal system to ensure school safety; developing a set of criteria for safe, violence-free, and tobacco-free schools; enhancing life skills education, civilized behavior education, and effectively organizing school psychological counseling. Educational institutions are required to build an environment that “says no to bullying”, detects deviant behaviors early, and intervenes promptly.

Nguyen Thuy Duong, an 11th grader at Cao Ba Quat High School, shared: “I once knew a friend who was often teased but did not dare to tell anyone. If there were a dedicated counselor and a behavioral skills class early on, they would probably be more confident in speaking up.” This opinion shows the urgent need for psychological support for students in reality.

In the 2025-2026 school year, the Ministry of Education and Training will step up coordination with ministries and branches to remove harmful content, offensive films, and dangerous trends on social networks, while strengthening legal education, traffic safety, and social evil prevention.

The Education sector also focuses on developing physical fitness and survival skills for students through school sports activities, with special priority given to teaching swimming, martial arts, and skill clubs; controlling meal quality and preventing food poisoning are assigned specific tasks to schools, with the supervision of the parent committee.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Huong, a parent of a student at Quang Trung Primary School (Cua Nam Ward) expressed: "In addition to closely coordinating with teachers, we also feel the responsibility to be more proactive in teaching our children life skills, self-protection skills and safe use of social networks. We hope the school will regularly update information and create a forum for parents to participate."

A new direction for the education sector in the 2025-2026 school year is to apply digital transformation in school safety management through digital maps that warn of risks and connect experts when crises occur. The education sector will also improve the capacity of teachers and school health workers, and strengthen the student support system not only in academics but also in psychology and health.
