Little known facts about the iconic bridges of Hue City

The ancient capital of Hue is changing every day, roads are being expanded, new bridges are being built to connect, promote traffic and urban development.

Located near the Hue Citadel, Truong Tien Bridge is the first bridge across the Perfume River, started in 1897 under the reign of King Thanh Thai. More than 400m long, 6m wide, the bridge has a steel structure, built with modern Western techniques and materials at that time.

Over time, the bridge has had many names such as Thanh Thai, Clemenceau, Nguyen Hoang... Notably, in the past, the bridge collapsed 3 times.

After the Tet Mau Than incident in 1968 caused the collapse of Truong Tien Bridge, the government at that time built Phu Xuan Bridge, also known as New Bridge by the people. Construction began in 1970, the bridge is 374m long, 17m wide, and has 4 lanes. Initially, the bridge was named Huong River, but after 1975 it was changed to Phu Xuan.

Phu Luu Bridge is a residential bridge over 100m long and 3m wide, connecting Nguyen Sinh Cung Street with Con Hen. Built in 1967, the bridge mainly serves the people of Con Hen - an oasis in the middle of the Huong Giang River.

Inaugurated at the end of August 2012, Da Vien Bridge was designed not only to serve traffic but also to be an ideal place for relaxation and sightseeing with six gazebos placed along the bridge.

The project is 542.5m long, 24.5m wide with four lanes and two sidewalks for pedestrians.

Meanwhile, Nguyen Hoang Bridge was technically opened to traffic on March 26, 2025. 380m long, consisting of 5 reinforced concrete girder spans, the bridge is 43m wide with 6 car lanes, 2 motorbike lanes (3.5m wide), and a pedestrian lane also 3.5m wide.

The system of 60 royal parasols and the unique steel dome make the building both modern and imbued with Hue character.

Although not located on the Huong River, the Thuan An seaport overpass is gradually being completed and is gradually becoming a new symbol in Hue City. The bridge is permanently built with reinforced concrete and prestressed reinforced concrete, with a total length of 2.36km and a width of 20m. The bridge is part of the Hue City coastal road project with a total cost of more than VND2,400 billion in phase 1. The project is expected to be technically opened to traffic on September 2 and completed by the end of 2025 if the site handover progress is guaranteed.
