Tighten durian export process: Must control from root to package
On August 4, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment issued Decision No. 3015 on "Food safety control process for exported fresh durian", effective from the date of signing.
This document sets out mandatory requirements throughout the entire production chain, from cultivation, harvesting, transportation, preservation, packaging to export to ensure that Vietnamese durian is qualified to access demanding markets.
Each batch of durian must have a recognized growing area code and packing facility.
According to the new process, fresh durian for export must:
Originates from inspected, supervised and coded growing areas and production facilities.
Be on the list recognized by the competent authority of the importing country, if required by that market.
Sorted, packed and labelled at a qualified and listed packing facility.
In addition, products must also meet labeling requirements, heavy metal residue limits and other indicators related to food hygiene and safety.
Food Safety Certification: Who Must Submit and When?
In case the importing country requires Vietnamese authorities to issue a food safety certificate, the exporting enterprise must submit the application to the unit assigned by the Provincial People's Committee to inspect and certify in accordance with regulations.
If the importing country does not require state certification, but has its own food safety standards, businesses must still register for voluntary inspection and certification to ensure customs clearance of goods.
Standardizing the quality control process right from the cultivation stage will help improve the position of Vietnamese durian in the international market, while limiting export risks due to not meeting the standards of the importing country. This is an important step to respond to the trend of tightening control of agricultural products in major markets such as China, the EU and South Korea.
