Notably, 1,293 deaths were recorded in Al-Haouz province, the epicenter of the earthquake, and 452 in Taroudant province, the two worst-hit areas.

On the evening of September 8, the US Geological Survey said a magnitude 6.8 earthquake occurred in a mountainous area 72km southwest of the tourist city of Marrakesh. This is the most terrifying earthquake in Morocco in decades.

The country's authorities have declared three days of national mourning, while rescue teams continue to search for survivors.
