Thousands evacuated in Tianjin, China due to high-rise building cracks

Large cracks appeared on roads near a residential area in Tianjin's Jinnan district on Thursday, and geological experts said they were likely caused by underground cavities 1,300 meters deep.

Thousands of people were killed in China because of the high-rise building collapse.

As of June 3, a total of 3,899 residents from at least three 25-story buildings had been evacuated to nearby hotels, the Global Times reported, citing district authorities.

Tianjin authorities called the incident an “unusual geological disaster” after geological experts and several government agencies surveyed the site. “This situation is very rare,” said an expert at the Tianjin city government headquarters.

Tianjin authorities said it could not be ruled out that the drilling of geothermal wells had led to soil erosion and subsidence in the area. Experts said high-rise buildings facing the street were affected to varying degrees.

Roads were seen bent and warped in photos on social media, while others showed part of a building's wall tiles falling to the floor.
