Cherry blossoms begin to bloom in Seoul, South Korea

The capital Seoul saw its first cherry blossoms, a symbol of spring, bloom on April 1, the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) said.

The KMA made the announcement while observing a 60-year-old cherry blossom tree planted in front of the Seoul Meteorological Station in the central district of Jongno, which is used by the KMA as a benchmark to determine the date when cherry blossoms begin to bloom in Seoul.

This year's cherry blossoms started blooming a week later than last year but still marked the fifth earliest bloom since the KMA began observing in 1922.

Typically, the first cherry blossoms bloom on April 8 every year, and the earliest recorded cherry blossom season so far was in 2021 when the first flowers bloomed on March 24.

Experts say the reason cherry blossom season has started earlier in recent years is because climate change has caused the Earth's temperature to rise.

2014 was the first year that Seoul witnessed the first cherry blossoms blooming in March (March 28). Before 2014, the capital of South Korea had never seen cherry blossoms officially blooming in March.

In spring in Korea, cherry blossoms usually bloom after yellow bell flowers and then azaleas with clearly differentiated periods.

However, in recent years, the flowering of these three plants has tended to occur more simultaneously, suggesting that ecological shifts could pose risks to insects that depend on these flowers for pollen and nectar, as well as to the plants that rely on those insects for pollination.
