On June 16, information from Thong Nhat Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City said that this unit actively coordinated with hospitals including Cho Ray, Central Military Hospital 108, Central Hue, Children's Hospital 2 and support forces (Traffic Police, Tan Son Nhat Airport, Vietnam Airlines) to organize the collection and transportation of 7 organs from brain-dead donors and successfully transplant them to 7 patients.

Previously, on June 11, Thong Nhat Hospital received a case of a man named NHN (39 years old, residing in Phu Yen province) for emergency treatment due to a very severe traumatic brain injury. The victim suffered from brain contusion, cerebral hemorrhage and deep coma.

Upon admission, the Emergency Department doctors performed resuscitation and intubation, and also invited consultation from the Department of Surgery-Anesthesiology and Resuscitation and the Department of Neurosurgery. Despite the doctors' efforts to save the victim, he was brain dead.

Immediately afterwards, the Board of Directors of Thong Nhat Hospital activated the hospital's Organ Donation and Transplantation Association, met with and persuaded the victim's family.

After a thorough explanation, the family agreed to donate tissues, organs, and body parts when the victim was brain dead. A professional council consisting of members inside and outside the hospital with related specialties was established to assess the brain death status of the organ donor.

On the morning of June 13, after the conclusion of the Professional Council, Associate Professor, Doctor, Doctor Le Dinh Thanh, Director of Thong Nhat Hospital, chaired a professional consultation with experts from the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center, Hospital 108 ( Hanoi ), Hue Central Hospital, and Children's Hospital 2 (Ho Chi Minh City).

The experts agreed and decided to start the organ harvesting surgery at 3:30 p.m. on June 13.

The surgery to remove organs from a brain-dead donor was successful, 7 organs were taken and quickly transported to hospitals for transplant to recipients. Of these, 2 kidneys were transplanted to 2 patients at Thong Nhat Hospital; 1 heart, 1 part of liver, 2 corneas were transplanted to 4 patients at Hue Central Hospital and the remaining part of liver was transplanted to a child patient at Children's Hospital 2.

Currently, all organs have been successfully transplanted to 7 patients. The organ donor has also been brought home for a proper burial by Thong Nhat Hospital./.
