In a statement published by Al-Massirah TV on January 31, a spokesman for the Houthi armed forces said the force planned to continue targeting US and British warships in the Red Sea in self-defense.

The statement added that Houthi forces launched missiles at the US warship USS Gravely on January 30.

On the evening of January 30, the US Central Command announced that it had shot down an anti-ship cruise missile launched from Yemen towards the Red Sea, but did not announce any damage.

Earlier, Houthi spokesman Yahya Sarea announced that the armed group launched a missile attack on the US Navy ship USS Lewis B Puller in the Gulf of Aden on January 28.

The Houthis said the attack was carried out “in support of the oppressed Palestinian people”.

Houthi forces in Yemen have recently repeatedly targeted ships in the Red Sea, especially those bound for Israel.

The Houthis said the attacks were aimed at pressuring Israel to halt its military campaign in the Gaza Strip, a move that prompted the US and UK to launch retaliatory air strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen.

Meanwhile, the US has in recent months struck targets in Iraq, Syria and Yemen in response to attacks on US forces.

The back-and-forth attacks have raised concerns that conflict could erupt across the Middle East, turning the region into a "powder keg" that could explode out of control.
