During the meeting, Mr. Guterres affirmed that the UN will do everything in its power to help Haiti recover. For his part, Prime Minister Ariel Henry said that Haiti is conducting consultations with relevant parties, and reaffirmed the Haitian Government's determination to initiate the electoral process so that the people can decide, in the near future, who will represent them in various levels of elected bodies.

The UN Secretary-General also met with representatives of political parties, members of the High Transitional Council and heads of UN missions.

Speaking at a press conference after the end of his visit, Secretary-General Guterres stressed the severity of the humanitarian crisis in Haiti, requiring urgent and long-term support measures.

The UN chief called on the Security Council to authorize the immediate deployment of a strong international security force to support the Haitian National Police in their fight against gangs, which now control more than 80 percent of the capital Port-au-Prince.

Mr. Guterres highlighted the importance of an inclusive and Haitian-led political path towards holding elections and restoring constitutional order.

The UN Secretary-General's visit comes at a crucial time for Haiti, which has been ravaged by gang violence that has left more than 1,000 people dead, injured and kidnapped in the first five months of this year.

In recent months, Mr. Guterres has expressed deep concern about the security crisis in Haiti. In late May, he warned that the country’s “dire situation” threatened the security of the entire Caribbean region and beyond, urging the international community to respond.
