A video recorded at the Phinda Nature Reserve, South Africa, reveals the dramatic survival moment of a young waterbuck. The poor animal was chased by an adult male, forcing it to jump into a lake to escape.
However, the danger did not stop there. Under the water, a crocodile was waiting and did not miss the opportunity, immediately pouncing on the young antelope.
Luckily for the calf, the crocodile was not yet fully grown, making it unable to finish off its prey easily. After a fierce struggle, the calf escaped the crocodile's jaws and tried to swim towards shore.
It seemed like they had escaped, but something more unexpected and cruel happened: the young antelope was pushed back into the lake by its own kind.

Specifically, the male antelope was still standing and observing the whole incident. When the young antelope just set foot on the shore, it suddenly rushed forward, using its horns to knock the young antelope back into the lake, pushing it into the crocodile's circle once again.
However, fate smiled on the calf once again as it managed to escape the crocodile's jaws and run away. This time, the animal chose to move in the opposite direction, away from where the male antelope was waiting.
As for the crocodile, it seemed that it was not too hungry and was not interested in hunting. However, its bite still left a significant wound on the young antelope's back.
The male antelope’s cruelty towards its own kind remains a mystery. Experts believe that the male is most likely trying to drive the calf away from its mother in order to mate with the female.
The waterbuck is a medium-sized antelope found in sub-Saharan Africa. It is found near water sources and is 1.7 to 2.3 metres long and weighs 140 to 270 kg. Males are usually larger than females.
Only male waterbucks possess horns that range from 50 to 80 cm long. The horns are not only used for self-defense but are also used by males in battles for territory and mates.
The waterbuck's main diet consists of grasses, leaves and low shrubs. They are water-dependent animals and cannot survive long in dry conditions due to their daily need to drink water.
