“It is an honor to receive this recognition. I am very grateful for it. Unfortunately, I had a previous appointment and could not attend the ceremony at the White House. However, I still appreciate this award very much,” Messi sent a message when he could not attend.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is awarded to “individuals who have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, to world peace , or to other significant social, public, or private endeavors.” Messi is one of two athletes honored this year, alongside basketball legend Magic Johnson.
Despite only moving to the United States to play for Inter Miami last summer, Messi has quickly made a strong impression. The White House stressed that Messi received this award for his resounding success in his football career and his tireless efforts in charity work, "supporting health care and education programs for children around the world".
Before Messi, many other sports stars have also been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom such as Tiger Woods, Megan Rapinoe, Simone Biles and Katie Ledecky.
