Most wing collisions cause only minor damage, but there have been collisions that have caused severe damage.

Specifically, in 2016, at the airport in the Indonesian capital Jakarta, a Batik Air passenger plane was preparing to take off when its wing hit the tail of a TransNusa plane being towed across the runway.

Repairing an aircraft wing is not cheap. According to the website of aviation insurance company Global Aerospace, the cost of repairing the wing tip on the latest carbon fiber aircraft can be up to 1.5 million USD (39 billion VND).

Additionally, when an aircraft is damaged in a collision, the airline will have to withdraw it from the fleet for repairs. This affects passenger transport.

Aviation collisions and hazards

Wing strikes usually only cause damage to the wing. However, many aviation collisions can have catastrophic consequences.

In 1996, a Saudi Arabian airliner had just taken off from New Delhi airport (India) when it collided violently in the sky with a Kazakhstan Airlines plane preparing to land.

Bird strikes that damage an aircraft’s engines, wings, nose, or windshield do not pose a threat to passengers. Most planes are able to land after a collision. However, they are grounded for weeks for repairs.

For example, a cracked cockpit window can cost an airline $90,000 to repair, or a wing damaged by a bird strike can cost $500,000 to restore to normal.

In Vietnam, recently on the afternoon of June 27 at Noi Bai airport, two planes collided. The incident caused a Vietnam Airlines plane's tail wing to tear.
